Roundwood (238 metres above sea level) is one of many claimants to the title of Ireland's highest village. It is located east of the Wicklow Way. There are several pubs serving food, a bistro/ café, grocery shop and post office.
The nearby Vartry Reservoir, built in the 1860's to meet much of Dublin's water requirements, is a spectacular sight, visible both while walking on and descending from the trail. Those with extra time to spend in Roundwood, can follow the Slí na Sláinte signposted trail for a little over 7km around the reservoir or during summer months, visit 'Victoria's Way', a spiritual sculpture park just outside the village on the Sally Gap road.
Trail walkers who also enjoy mountain biking can take a break from hiking and experience the Ballinastoe Mountain Biking Trail (Coillte Outdoors) provided they arrange in advance to leave bikes at their Roundwood accommodation.
