We have just published a new map sheet: Wicklow East - 1:30,000 Detailed Map, 10 metre contouring. This is the final sheet (for the present anyway) in our Dublin & Wicklow map series. It covers from Bray to Wicklow town and inland from the coast to Sally Gap. The area is a mixture of urban & rural terrain with a surprising number of recreational opportunities. Surveyed extensively on foot and by bike 2008-2011, depicting in detail the complexity of the region. Many historical sites are plotted and named - old placenames have been recorded. The contouring is at a 10 metre due to popular demand but being based on the SRTM data, still has limitations in terms of fine detail. That said, it is perfectly functional for everyday use. The map is printed on high quality Pretex 120 gsm paper which is water and tear resistant.
We have presented this map in a slightly different way as the terrain is not characteristic of the neighbouring higher hills however the survey and feature classification is identical. It's fair to say that originally I thought this sheet would be the easiest to produce but as it turned out, due to the complexity of the urban-rural mix, it took quite a bit longer. No map is ever complete and I'll be glad to receive comments on any errors or omission with a view to improving future editions.
Looking forward, I hope to release a digital version of the area mapped to date. We haven't come to any final arrangements but it will likely run on mobile phone devices equipped with a GPS receiver - i.e. many of the smart phones that are currently available.
