The Skylark's Rest is a new 14-bed hostel located on the Lough Dan Road at the edge of Roundwood. It is just a short walk from the village and convenient to the Wicklow Way trail.
The hostel has a mix of rooms that include two-bed, four-bed and family rooms. Two rooms are ensuite and the other two bedrooms share a bathroom. Distant views of mountains such as Scar and Trooperstown Hill are visible from some bedrooms.
A self-catering kitchen is open for guests to prepare their own food. Food supplies can be bought at the local grocery shop which is within easy walking distance from the hostel. In addition to the dining room, guests are welcome to enjoy their meals outside on the picnic tables in the garden. A light self-service breakfast of tea/coffee, fruit juice and toast is provided in the morning and is included in the price.
There are several options for eating out in Roundwood. Live traditional music can be enjoyed in some of the pubs during the weekends and occasionally during the week.
Alternatively, an open fire is lit on cold evenings in the guest lounge. Guests can pick from a selection of board games to entertain themselves. Visitors can also chose something to read from a selection of books.
Walkers who wish to stay a little longer in the Roundwood area can consult the walking guide at the hostel. This contains information leaflets with detailed route descriptions for a range of walks located around Lough Dan, Luggala and the Vartry Reservoir.
There are four bicycles available to hire from the hostel to help in exploring a little further afield around Wicklow. These are hybrid bicycles which are only suitable for public or forestry roads. Guests wishing to cycle on the nearby Ballinastoe Trail need to bring their own specialist mountain bicycle. Facilities are available at the hostel to securely store bicycles.
The small size of the hostel provides an ideal opportunity for walking groups to block-book it at a discounted rate. The hostel may also be available to open outside of season dates with enough prior notice. Contact the Skylark's Rest for more details.
